Forget Salzburg, the Lederhosen's in London
Newsweek.com, August 24, 1999
Say "So long, farewell" to "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Make way for the latest vintage film to inspire people to dress up in crazy outfits and sing silly songs"The Sound of Music." In movie theaters in London's West End, the halls are alive with sing-along reruns of the 1965 classic, as viewers belt out "Doe, a deer, a female deer" along with Fraulein Maria (Julie Andrews) and the rest of the von Trapp family singers. Subtitles help filmgoers who don't yet know how to pronounce "auf Wiedersehen" or "Edelweiss," although amidst the loud cheering, no one is likely to notice anyway. Many von Trapp wanna-bes arrive decked out in nuns' habits or lederhosen, in imitation of their favorite character from the musical. Thanks to the huge success of the London performances, "The Sound of Music" will soon begin playing across England. The question remaining is what people will throw at the screenpine cones? Or maybe just a few of their favorite things.
